exTANt sound installation launches at the Tannery February 3 on First Friday

SANTA CRUZ, CA — January 13, 2023 —The community is invited to experience exTANt, an audio tour of the labor history of the 8-acre Tannery Arts Center site along the banks of the San Lorenzo River. A collaboration between public historian Kathleen Aston and media artist Yulia Gilich. exTANt traces historical linkages between communities who lived and worked in the area throughout the centuries: local Indigenous peoples, former Salz Tannery workers, and the Tannery Art Center live/work artists. Through oral history interviews, archival materials, and poetic soundscapes, exTANt considers the impacts the site has had on the workers, residents, and environment.

The project is a locative sound installation accessible via a mobile phone application. It
functions like an audio tour. Participants download the app and as they move through the
Tannery campus, their GPS coordinates trigger sound pieces associated with specific

is part of a year-long series of public art projects produced by Arts Council Santa
Cruz County in partnership with Radius Gallery and First Friday at the Tannery Arts Center.
